The head of the administration of the city of Belgorod, the capital of the Belgorod region in western Russia, Anton Ivanov, resigned after a strange incident when a projectile hit a residential building, which, according to the Russian side, was fired by the Ukrainian military.
“The head of the Belgorod city administration, Anton Ivanov, submitted his resignation in connection with the transition to another job,” said the governor of the Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, TASS reports.
He also informed that the first deputy of the city administration has already started to perform his duties.
Ivanov was elected head of the local administration last December.
A strange case in Belgorod
Ivanov resigned after videos showing a projectile of unknown origin hitting a residential building in the city of Belgorod were widely circulated on Russian social networks since October 12.
Then Governor Gladkov announced that the residential building was damaged by shelling of the Ukrainian army, and shared photos of large pieces of cement near the block.
Ukraine rejected his claims with the voice of presidential adviser Mykhailo Podoliak.
“Russia launched a missile in the direction of Kharkiv, but something went wrong and it hit a residential building in Belgorod, Russia. Will there be an investigation? Or punishment? No, Putin doesn’t care who he kills: Ukrainians or Russians. Propagandists will quickly find a false explanation,” he wrote on Twitter.
Although the Ukrainian version of events has also not been independently confirmed, several videos released over the months have captured Iskander missiles exploding in the air over Russian cities immediately after launch.
Many of them were filmed in the Belgorod region, on the border with Ukraine.
