At least 40 people were killed and dozens seriously injured after a suspension bridge collapsed in the western Indian state of Gujarat on Sunday, two government officials said.

More than 400 people were on the bridge in the town of Morbi when the bridge collapsed into the Machchu River, local TV channel Zee News reported.

“People fell into the river, there are victims. We don’t have the numbers yet. Rescue operations are ongoing,” Rahul Tripathi, a senior police officer at the scene, told Reuters.

Television footage showed dozens of people clinging to the cables of the collapsed bridge as emergency crews tried to rescue them.

The historic 230-meter bridge was built during the British rule in the 19th century. It was closed for renovations for six months and reopened to the public last week.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in his home state of Gujarat on a three-day visit, said he had ordered the immediate mobilization of teams for the rescue operation.
