Former Scottish F1 driver David Coulthard spoke about the fighting spirit of Fernando Alonso after the Spaniard’s horrific crash at the Austin circuit.
The two-time world champion was involved in a horrific crash after colliding with Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll. The Alpine car “took off” before hitting the barriers and the Spaniard said he got scared when memories of Melbourne 2016 came to mind and he thought his race was over.
Surprisingly, however, the car was not damaged enough to abandon the race, and the Spanish driver, replacing the front wing, returned to finish 7th.
David Coulthard argued that another driver would not have been able to continue after such an accident and would have given up immediately. “I think another, more inexperienced rider would have given up.
As soon as the car hits the wall after the fall, it will mean that the race is over. But not Fernando, who not only continued, but also “fell” to 17th place after the pit stop, finished in 7th place. Plus, he’s 41 years old. Young riders should take lessons from the two-time champion.”
Alonso’s points were later deducted as he was given a 30 second penalty. The stewards agreed after Haas protested that his car was unsafe and that he should have been shown the black and orange flag because of the mirror hanging after accident and towards the end of the race it broke down.
