The Main Directorate of Intelligence under the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine (GUR) does not expect Russian troops to withdraw from the occupied city of Kherson in southern Ukraine, on the contrary, to protect it, dpa and Agerpres reported on Monday.
On the contrary, the Russian army is preparing to defend the city, the administrative center of the oblast of the same name, said the head of the State Administration of Ukraine Kyrylo Budanov in an extended interview with the local publication “Ukrainian Pravda” on Monday.
“The Russian occupiers create the impression that they are leaving Kherson, but in fact they are deploying new units there,” Budanov said in the mentioned interview.
According to Budanov, quoted by Reuters, the evacuation, which the Russians announced earlier, will be part of a disinformation campaign.
On the one hand, Russia is transporting its financial structures, equipment, unprotected residents and victims from Kherson, and on the other hand, it is strengthening the defense here, he says.
Kyrylo Budanov says that the Russians want to create a false impression about the situation in Kherson
“They create the illusion that all is lost. And at the same time, they are bringing new military units here and preparing for street battles in Kherson,” said the head of the GUR IA “Interfax-Ukraine”.
Over the past 24 hours, Moscow has increased its accusations that Ukraine is preparing a “dirty weapons” attack on its own territory in Kherson, then blaming it on Russian forces, while Moscow usually blames the other side for its intentions. , Ukrainian commentators believe.
The Ukrainian army, which has been conducting a counteroffensive in the east and south since the end of August, has recently been advancing, albeit slowly, into the south of Ukraine, even into the regions recently annexed by Russia (Khersonshchyna and Zaporizhzhia). .
Despite several days of public talk of a Ukrainian counteroffensive in Kherson, Kyiv has remained largely silent on military action in the area, as it did in September, when it returned large swaths of Kharkiv Oblast to Russian forces.
