New Prime Minister Giorgia Maloney and his ministers, who form Italy’s most right-wing and Eurosceptic government since 1946, were sworn in Saturday morning at the Quirinal Palace, AFP reports, Agerpres reports.

The ceremony in the palace that dominates Rome, the residence of the popes and kings of Italy before it became the residence of the President of the Republic, took place in the presence of the head of state, President Sergio Mattarella.

Giorgia Maloney, dressed in a low-key black suit, was the first to take the oath, followed by the two deputy prime ministers from the two parties in her coalition, Matteo Salvini, head of the League formation, and Antonio Tajani, a senior official of the Forza party Silvio Berlusconi’s Italia.

They all appeared in turn before Sergio Mattarella to take the traditional oath: “I swear to be faithful to the Republic, to loyally respect the Constitution and the laws, and to carry out my mandate solely in the interest of the nation.”

The list of ministers chosen by Giorgia Maloney, who with her post-fascist Fratelli d’Italia party won a historic victory in parliamentary elections on September 25 with 26% of the vote, reflects a desire to appease Rome’s partners worried about the coming to power in Italy of a far-right head of government.

The appointment of former European Parliament President Antonio Tajani from Foreign Affairs as Deputy Prime Minister was immediately endorsed on Friday by European People’s Party President Manfred Weber as a “guarantee for a pro-European and Atlantic Italy”.

Another guarantee for Brussels is Giancarlo Giorgetti, representative of the moderate wing of the League, who was already a minister in the government at the end of the term of Mario Draghi, who received the important portfolio of the economy.

Populist Matteo Salvini is forced to settle for the portfolio of infrastructure and transport, although he craved the most prestigious interior that has been given to a technocrat.

Among the 24 ministers, only six women received secondary portfolios.

The transfer of power between Mario Draghi and Giorgia Maloney will take place at 08:30 GMT on Sunday at Kiji Palace, the seat of government, a stone’s throw from parliament, followed by the first council of ministers.

This protocol stage is marked by Mario Draghi’s symbolic transfer of the bell to Giorgia Maloney, with which the head of government brings order to the debates in the executive branch.
