“Professor Gheorghe Mencinikopski died a few minutes ago in a hospital in the capital, at the age of 73, he had been in the hospital for several days with a serious lung disease. I learned this news from my family,” Bibiana Stanchulov, the owner of the magic factory in Topoloven, told Agrointel, Libertatea reports.
Gheorghe Mencinikopski was sentenced in 2014 to eight years in the case of the fraudulent privatization of the Institute for Food Research (ICA), of which he was the director. In the same trial, Dan Voiculescu was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
He was released due to illness in 2016 from the Rakhiv colony after serving two years and one month of punishment.
Scientific researcher Gheorghe Mencinikopski was born on May 1, 1949 in the commune of Domnest, Arges County. Mencinikopski, a biologist, biochemist and Romanian researcher, was the director of the Food Research Institute.

On December 11, 2019, President Klaus Iohannis signed decrees revoking awards awarded to some convicted individuals, including Adrian Nestase, Miron Mitrea, Adrian Severin, Dan Voiculescu, Emilian Cutianu, and Gheorghe Mencinikopski.
In addition, based on the provisions of Article 100 of the Constitution of Romania, reissued, Art. 51 liters a from the Law No. 29/2000 on the system of national awards of Romania, reissued, as well as the Emergency Decree of the Government of Romania no. 105/2000 regarding the restoration of the National Order, Cross and Medal of “Faithful Service”, approved by Law No. 543/2001 with the following amendments, was withdrawn:
