According to BBC News, some countries asked to pay more after Russia was excluded from the competition. The decision to involve Russia was announced during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“One of the problems we are facing is the lack of interest from donors, so we decided to use the available resources to finance national projects,” the Montenegrin TV channel RTCG said in an announcement, among other things.
Two networks – RTCG and MRT – that opted out failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the competition in Turin, Italy last year.
Specifically, North Macedonia’s MRT said in a statement: “The increased registration fee for participation, as well as the energy crisis in the country” forced them to make this decision.
