North Korea warned on Saturday that it would “take overwhelming military countermeasures” against what it called deliberate provocations by South Korea, as tensions remain high following Pyongyang’s ballistic missile launches in recent weeks, News.ro reported.
The warning from a spokesman for the Korean People’s Army (KPA) came a day after it fired a short-range ballistic missile into the sea and hundreds of artillery shells near the border with South Korea.
KPA forward units opened artillery fire on Friday to send a clear warning about “repeated enemy provocations in frontline areas,” the spokesman said in a statement carried by North Korea’s official KCNA news agency.
Also, in the future, our military will never allow any provocations from the enemy to escalate military tension on the Korean Peninsula, but will use thorough and overwhelming military countermeasures,” the message reads.
North Korea also flew warplanes near its military border with South Korea on Friday, prompting the country to take turns flying fighter jets.
On Friday, South Korea said its artillery fire was a “regular, legitimate” exercise.
