ESIEA: “TV crews must be immediately removed from the home of a 12-year-old child”

Intervention to present your topic 12 years in order to protect the confidentiality of the identity of the minor, she made Association of Editorsurging TV news directors to immediately withdraw film crews from the girl’s home, and not to publish information that could lead to her identification and re-victimization.

“The Board of Directors of ESIEA, like the whole of Greek society, is watching with horror the developments in the case of sexual abuse and exploitation of a 12-year-old child, as well as the unrestricted coverage of this issue by some media, especially some TV channels.

We call on information directors of TV channels to immediately withdraw film crews from the orphanage and strictly refrain from making public any information that could lead to the identification of a 12-year-old girl and her re-victimization.

We remind you that the European and Greek legislation on broadcasting programs, on the protection of personal data and, of course, the Principles of Journalistic Ethics, as well as international conventions on the rights of the child, clearly state that the media and journalists have an obligation to protect the age of children and respect the individual’s personality. Any violation of this mission will result in severe legal and disciplinary sanctions.

The ESIEA Board of Directors is sending letters to the National Radio and Television Council and the Office for the Protection of Personal Data to resolve this issue. Letters are also addressed to the information directors of TV stations with the aim of immediately stopping the abuse of journalism by highlighting this particular case without any restrictions on ethics and morality.

We also remind you that the presumption of innocence is a fundamental principle of our legal culture, which must be respected by the media and journalists. Information about unproven involvement in the family environment of the accused can cause irreparable damage to their personal and professional lives and is morally and ethically reprehensible.”
