A man fatally shot five people, including an off-duty police officer, in Raleigh in the southeastern United States on Friday, the city’s mayor said in the evening, according to AFP and news.ro.
Several people were also injured, and the attacker escaped but was “surrounded,” authorities in the North Carolina city said at a press conference.
“At approximately 8:00 p.m. (00:00 GMT Friday), Raleigh police said they surrounded a suspect at a residence in the area,” Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin said, mourning a “sad and tragic day.”
According to the mayor, a police dog is among the injured, the number of which the authorities have not announced.
The United States pays a very high price for the proliferation of firearms on its soil and the ease with which Americans have access to them.
About 49,000 people died from gunshot wounds in 2021, up from 45,000 in 2020, already a record year. This amounts to more than 130 deaths per day, more than half of which are suicides.
