Prosecutor General Gabriela Scutia signed on Thursday at the headquarters of Eurojust in The Hague an amendment to the Agreement on the establishment of a joint investigative team, according to which Romania, through the PÎCCJ – Military Prosecutor’s Office, became part of a joint investigative team on war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the context of a military attack to Ukraine, the institution said in a statement.
The joint investigative team was established on March 25, 2022 by Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine with the support of Eurojust, and later Latvia, Estonia and Slovakia became parties.
The Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague also participates in the joint investigative team.
The purpose of this Joint Investigation Team is to facilitate the investigation and prosecution of alleged international crimes in Ukraine by enhancing cooperation between parties and participants.
The Joint Investigation Team is a mechanism for international judicial cooperation in criminal cases, which includes a legal agreement between competent authorities formed by several states for the purpose of conducting a criminal investigation.
We will remind you that in July, the General Prosecutor’s Office of Romania filed an ex officio statement regarding the aggression of Moscow troops against Ukraine.
According to a PÎCJ press release at the time, the agency self-reported “crimes against humanity, ahead. art 439 par. (1) lit. g) and k) of the Criminal Code”. The competence to conduct investigations belongs to the department of military prosecutors.
