Across the country: a school close to home and quick admissions – what computer records show

The rising cost of living and the difficulty of finding affordable student housing has led 18-year-olds to choose home schooling. At the same time, guaranteed appointment schools such as the police saw a surge in demand. Interestingly, the demand for pedagogy departments also increased after the resumption of appointments in the public education system. Studying the first preferences of candidates in electronic report shows them how the young people of Greece work, how they fulfill their dreams and how they can reconcile them with the need for a secure job and quickly.

In particular, as follows from the processing of this year’s data by the mathematician Stratos Stratigakis National exams As for 2021, accuracy and energy bills seem to have spooked parents, which is why some candidates have decided to announce a school near their home as their first goal. Thus, in regional schools, we had a large increase in first preferences and a decrease in total preferences, as applicants from other, remote places avoided declaring them. Characteristically, in the Department of Business Administration of Chios, the first preferences almost tripled from 39 in 2021 to 108 in 2022, while the number of candidates who declared for the same school decreased by 214, from 3042 to 2828. And this is not the only section where something similar happens. In the Department of Administrative Sciences and Technology in Kozani, the number of first preferences increased from 12 to 44, while the total number of preferences decreased from 2958 to 2754. Respective behavior in economics in Kastoria, in biology in Crete and in mathematics in Samos. These are sections of the 4th scientific direction (economics and IT), for which we had a larger number of candidates this year, so reducing the total number of candidates is not logical.

At the same time, an increase in the first preferences in police schools, for which positions are determined ministry of civil protection and sure of the meeting. In particular, at the Officers’ School EL.AS. this year, compared to 2021, the number of candidates who declared it as their first preference increased by 487 (from 752 last year to 1239 this year). This is the school that “achieved” the largest increase in first preference claims. At the same time, the number of first preferences increased by 181 (from 313 to 494) at the Police School this year.

In addition, appointments made in the past three years in the public education system and the extension of pre-school education to two years seem to have reawakened the interest of 18-year-olds in pedagogy. Thus, we see an increase in the total number of candidates – by 3,281 – who declared the Faculty of Sciences of Preschool Education. This is the school that “achieved” the largest increase in declarations, regardless of the rating with which it was declared by the candidates.

Another element that influenced the choice of candidates was the minimum reception base available in each department. Significantly, 15 of the 21 faculties at the University of Ioannina that increased their minimum enrollment base ratio saw their total number of applicants drop from 860 to 5,224. less), 8 belong to the University of Ioannina. As a result, 966 vacancies remained in the institution.

At the same time, the selection of candidates is also influenced by their distribution in 4 scientific fields (humanities, positive studies, health studies and economics/IT). For example, this year the Faculty of Information and Communication Systems in Samos was added to the 4th direction (Economics – Information Technology). Thus, it enters the 2nd and 4th fields. This resulted in the first preferences of candidates jumping from 7 in 2021 to 179 in 2022, and the total number of preferences from 649 to 2405. The corresponding behavior in the Department of Finance and Banking of Piraeus, which this year also joined the 2nd field: another 777 candidates declared so in their computerized form. “Inclusion in more areas may seem like a solution for some regional offices, but it creates an inequity in admitting to the same school candidates who have passed exams in different subjects and compared them in terms of the scores they scored after passing exams in different subjects . . This is one of the most serious distortions of the import system,” says Mr. Stratigakis.

They jumped back…

On the other hand, there has been a significant reduction in preferences for the merchant fleet. In graduate school, we had 128 fewer candidates who declared it their first choice, and 757 fewer overall who chose it. In terms of mechanics, we had -73 and -644, respectively.

Finally, preference is expected to decrease in schools of the 1st direction (humanitarian), since this year we have had a large decrease in the total number of candidates in the direction. Last year 22,594 candidates competed, and this year only 18,276. Despite all this, in the field of law, the most sought-after field, 74 more candidates were announced, from 2054 to 2128.

487 more applicants compared to 2021 – the biggest increase of any school – have set the Hellenic School of Police Officers as their first target.

181 more were at the Police Academy.

1418 they chose Athenian medicine, invariably first on the list of preferences, as it always is.

3 the faculties – in Messolonghi, Drama and Serres – were not chosen by any candidate as their first target.

fifteen of the 21 faculties of the University of Ioannina that maintained a high minimum admission base, a decrease in first preferences was recorded.
