Polish fire services are inspecting the country’s bomb shelters and conducting an inventory, a deputy minister said on Monday, after Russia invaded Ukraine and Belarus President Oleksandr Lukashenko said Poland could send armed forces to the border between the two countries, Reuters reported.
While Poland, a NATO member, has assured its citizens that its place in the alliance guarantees them safety from Russian attacks, events in neighboring Ukraine have underscored the need to be prepared for the possibility of a missile strike.
“We have 62,000 such facilities across the country,” Deputy Interior Minister Maciej Vasik told private broadcaster Polsat News.
“Firefighters check their condition, whether they are equipped and suitable for use. If not, we will take measures to adapt them.”
On Monday, Poland advised its citizens not to travel to Belarus, and advised those already in the neighboring country to leave.
The announcement came as Belarusian dictator Oleksandr Lukashenko said Monday during a meeting with his generals that Poland could send troops to the border between the two countries, citing it as a pretext for deploying joint military forces with Russia. .
