The competition will be financed by the funds of local and national authorities, as well as broadcasters.

Bill Eddy, chief executive of Liverpool Business Improvement District (BID), said many people in the city woke up with a hangover on Saturday after celebrating the news.

“This moment is the awakening of consciousness, now the hard work begins. It’s been hard work preparing this bid to convince the BBC and the European Broadcasting Union that Liverpool is the right place,” Addy said.
