Martian time from Omega and the European Space Agency

A clock that shows both Earth and Martian time? The inhabitants of Omega seem to be seeing the future and looking forward to the next big step in space exploration: a manned mission to the Red Planet! As you know, Omega, the brand that created the famous Moonwatch, the first watch worn on the moon, always looks into space. “Anyone who is interested in space or even science fiction is obsessed with Mars. (This planet) has sparked our curiosity so much, it has spawned so many incredible stories. We even gave a name to its imaginary inhabitants. He is so close to us and at the same time so far away. We can’t wait to walk on its surface. Being here on Earth and being able to track its movements, the term “observe” takes on a whole new meaning. I am delighted with this addition to the renowned Speedmaster family.” With these words, Omega influencer Reynald Ashlimann hailed the creation of the Speedmaster X-33 Marstimer.

What is so special about this new Speedmaster watch? This is the fruit of Omega’s collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) and is designed to measure time not only on planet Earth, but also on the mysterious red planet! It has been developed as an auxiliary tool for scientists and offers a number of useful features and capabilities for those working in the field of space exploration. Its features were developed under a patented license from ESA and include an MTC function to track the Martian solar date and time at the prime meridian, taking into account the fact that the Martian day is 39 minutes longer than on Earth. In addition, they have an innovative solar compass for determining true north on both planet Earth and Mars. Users also have access to apps available on the traditional Speedmaster Skywalker X33 such as MET (Mission Elapsed Time), PET (Phase Elapsed Time), alarm clocks and a perpetual calendar.

All this thanks to the modern quartz movement Omega Caliber 5622, which adapts to the ambient temperature and quickly and efficiently controls the various digital and analog functions of the watch.

But aesthetically, things are equally impressive. The Speedmaster X-33 Marstimer is housed in a 45mm Grade 2 titanium case with a satin finish.

Its classic black dial has a background with several analog and digital indicators that create a color contrast to stand out even more with the Earth and Mars symbols to distinguish which specific functions are being used.

The bezel is special with a special color ring made of oxalate anodized aluminum in hematite red, reminiscent of the characteristic dust on the surface of Mars. The same color tone is present at the tip of the central second hand, which is a gradient starting from black and ending in red hematite, a design element that betrays that this is an Omega professional instrument.

The watch’s screw-down caseback features an embossed central image of a walrus, the iconic symbol of the Omega Speedmaster. The words SPEEDMASTER X-33 MARSTIMER, ESA TESTED AND QUALIFIED are engraved on the periphery.

The Marstimer watch is paired with grade 2 and 5 titanium bracelets and also comes with a second NATO style strap that can be replaced by the wearer using a special tool also included. This is a special leather case, the inner lining of which is dedicated to the Red Planet and depicts in relief the Gorge of Gebes – a unique, extremely steep canyon on the surface of Mars.
