
Two days after the shipwreck of the migrants in KiteraThe Coast Guard’s retrieval of the bodies began today in the midst of inclement weather.
So far, six bodies have been identified and collected by Coast Guard Submarine Mission Team officers in the Diakofti area of Kythera.
It is recalled that the unfortunate migrants were on board a sailboat that collided with rocks in the area early Thursday morning (10.06), partially sank, and then was completely destroyed.
As it became known, according to the migrants, there were 95 people on board the sailboat, 9 migrants are still missing.
80 people, including 18 minors, 7 women and 55 men, were rescued from the wreck by Coast Guard forces with the assistance of EMAK, police and volunteers.
From the day of the incident, Coast Guard forces with a high seas ship and a brigade of the 1st EMAK were constantly on the scene from the day of the incident, but due to adverse weather conditions, the operation to search for missing people was not possible, as the wind was blowing at the site with a force of up to 10 points on the Beaufort scale.
The investigation is expected to be suspended for today and will resume tomorrow, Sunday, at dawn.
At the same time, according to ERT, relatives of the missing, who arrived from different parts of Europe, are on the island in the morning and are informed through a special coast guard channel.
One of the traffickers has already been arrested, a man from Syria, who will be taken to the Piraeus prosecutor’s office on Monday. The second smuggler is presumed to be missing.
