North Korea has launched its eighth ballistic missile in two weeks into waters off its east coast, regional governments announced Sunday morning (local time).
The Japanese government confirmed the launch in a statement, while South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported the launch, citing the military. There were no other details about the weapon or the distance it flew, DPA and Agerpres reported.
The launch came hours after South Korean and US forces completed joint naval exercises involving the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan.
North Korea’s National Aeronautics and Space Administration on Saturday justified the missile launches as a self-defense measure against the United States.
According to a statement published by North Korea’s state news agency KCNA, they do not pose a threat to immediate neighbors in the region.
Last Tuesday, North Korea fired an intermediate-range missile over Japan for the first time in five years, sparking fresh international condemnation.
UN resolutions prohibit North Korea from testing ballistic missiles of any range, which, depending on the model, can also carry a nuclear warhead.
