In an interview with the BBC, Zelenskyi said: “They are starting to prepare their society. This is very dangerous. They are not ready to do it, to use it. But they start talking. They don’t even know if they will use it or not. I think it’s dangerous to just talk about it.”

The Ukrainian leader denies calls for strikes on Russia and says he instead called for pre-emptive sanctions against Moscow.

Speaking to an Australian think tank on Thursday, Volodymyr Zelenskyi said he believed “strikes” were necessary to prevent any use of nuclear weapons.

He did not specify what kind of strikes he was talking about, but his words were criticized by the Kremlin as a “call for the start of a new world war.”

In an interview with the BBC, Zelenskyi said that the word he used in Ukrainian was misunderstood.

“After this translation, the Russians did as they do, as they see fit, and began to translate (the statement) in other directions,” he said.
