The Beatles: 60 years since “Love Me Do” – the history of the song

Many songs of the popular British band The Beatles which became hits immediately after their release and are classified as rock classics, but few of them are considered “legendary”. “love me do‘ is one of them.

This is a song that was released in the UK on October 5, 1962 and in which the entire composition of the Beatles is involved: o John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison as well as Ringo Starr. In fact, “Love Me Do” was the band’s first single to be heard on the radio by the British.

Opinions about the song vary, even among composers, but the only thing that can’t be doubted is its originality. Two years later, in May 1964, this work was played on American radio stations, but, of course, the popularity in Britain was different. Nevertheless, the harmony and catchy titles make “Love Me Do” irresistible to fans of old songs.

The creation of the “great philosophical song,” as McCartney described it, takes us back to 1958, when the 16-year-old musician wrote the “skeleton” of “Love Me Do,” namely the verse about his former partner, Iris. Caldwell. By that time, he had already met Lennon (July 6, 1957 was their first meeting), and it is believed that Lennon helped complete the early form of the song. So it was a collaboration, even though Lennon claimed it was “Paul’s song.”

The texts they chose are directly related to their love for the literary works of Lewis Carroll. The phrase “Love, love me, do” came from the Carroll era, as did “Alice, stop dreaming, do.” Lennon’s obsession with Carroll continued to be an integral part of the band’s career, and it later showed up in songs like “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” and “I Am The Walrus”. But in Mark Lewisohn’s book Tune In, the author mentions that “Love Me Do” may have been inspired by the Elvis movie “Love Me Tender” or the music production company “Love Me Do” publications that were released in the UK in February. 1957.

Four years after the original “Love Me Do” composition, the Beatles decided to enrich the song with some of their later influences.

McCartney lied about the history behind “Love Me Do”, saying it was one of the songs written later in the band’s career. “We tried to convince people that we released about 100 songs before Love Me Do. It was a slight exaggeration. Probably four is still less than 20, but when we talked to journalists, it sounded better when we told them that we wrote more than 100.

“Love Me Do” became a hit in the US. It topped the Billboard 100 Top Songs for one week and stayed there for a total of 14 weeks. It was included on the album “1962-1966” (also known as “The Red Album”), which peaked at number three on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums list and stayed there for 175 weeks.

The official charts report that “Love Me Do” was the most played in the UK. He made the list three times: in 1962, he finished 17th, in 1982, 4th, and in 1992, 53rd.
