The support of Tebet, who won nearly 5 million votes in Sunday’s first round, is a major boost for former president Lula as he and Bolsonaro seek to improve their support ahead of a tense and increasingly competitive second round.

Tebet said he would support Lula because he, unlike Bolsonaro, has demonstrated his commitment to democracy and Brazil’s constitution. It remains to be seen how many of her voters will support the former president.

On Tuesday, Lula secured the support of the fourth-place candidate, leftist Ciro Gomez, who agreed with his Democratic Workers’ Party (PDT) decision to support Lula but did not give him the same public support.

Together, Tebet and Gomez received 7% of the votes cast on Sunday. Lula won 48.4% in the first round, while Bolsonaro won 43.2% of the vote, topping opinion polls and raising hopes among his supporters.
