The true story of the film “Emancipation” starring Will Smith received rave reviews after a special screening at an Apple event in conjunction with the NAACP. Smith plays a runaway slave who crosses the swamps of Louisiana on an arduous journey to reunite with his family.
NAACP CEO and President Derrick Johnson called it “a powerful story of love and triumph.”
However, according to EW, the fate of the film, like many of Smith’s other projects, is up in the air following the infamous Oscar night slap on Chris Rock.
“During my career, I have turned down a lot of films about slavery. I never wanted to convey something like this to us. And then this movie came along. This is a film about freedom, about the strength of the soul and about faith,” Will Smith, who has kept a low profile since the incident, said at the event.
According to Apple, it will air on December 2nd in select theaters and will also be available worldwide via Apple TV+. 9th of the same month.
