Death in a Bottle: Seven Murders and the Unsolved Mystery of Tylenol

One of the greatest mysteries of the last 40 years started early in the morning with some common symptoms: a sore throat and a runny nose. When 12-year-old Mary Kellerman from Chicago complained to her parents about a cold, they gave her painkiller Tylenol. They didn’t know, of course, that the medicine was poisoned with cyanide. By 7 am Mary was dead.

On the same day, 27-year-old postman Adam Janus from Illinois died. At first, the doctors thought it was a heart attack, but in the end it turned out that he, too, had poisoned himself with cyanide. His brother and his wife Stanley, 25, and Teresa, 19, rushed to his house to comfort the rest of the family. The stress of the day gave them a headache, so they each took a Tylenol tablet or two found on the counter. Stanley died the same day and Teresa two days later.

Three more strange deaths occurred in the following days: Mary McFarland, 35, Paula Prince, 35, and Mary Weiner, 27. They all appeared to have taken Tylenol shortly before their deaths.
