Prince William, accompanied by his wife Kate, today made his first trip to Wales since assuming the title “Prince of Wales”, which was held by his father Charles until he returned to the throne.

The visit came after the end of the mourning of the royal family, which lasted until Monday evening, for Elizabeth II, who died on September 8.

The transfer of the title to William has once again caused discontent among some in Wales who feel that it should go to a Welshman, which has been the case since 1282. Over 35,000 signatures were collected in three weeks to strip Prince William of his title, calling it “an insult to Wales and a symbol of historic oppression”.

There was also a reaction to the desire of the palaces to hold an official ceremony, similar to the one that took place in 1969 for the title of Charles. The grandiose ceremony, which was broadcast on television, was watched by millions of people. Queen Elizabeth II placed the crown on the head of her son, who swore allegiance to his mother.

However, the current heir to the throne has no such plans, according to British media, which say that he intends to gradually win the trust of the people of Wales. Prince William lived for a time on the Isle of Anglesey in northwest Wales when he served as a helicopter pilot in the Royal Air Force.

Today, Prince William and Kate were warmly welcomed upon their arrival on the island and thanked them in Welsh for their welcome by posting on Twitter.

The title of Princess of Wales for Kate is also special, as it was linked to the late Diana, who died in a car accident in Paris in 1997. Camilla, Charles’ second wife, never used the title.
