OUR European Bird Festivalwhich is also celebrated in our country Greek Ornithological Societygives everyone the opportunity to experience the unique world of migratory birds, even without equipment or special knowledge, at events organized throughout Greece this weekend.
The European Bird Festival was first organized by Birdlife International in 1993. today celebrated in more than 100 countries. In our country, the events are coordinated by the Hellenic Ornithological Society in cooperation with the authorities of protected areas, environmental organizations and environmental education centers. “The purpose of the events is to inform and raise awareness about the need to protect migratory birds,” explains Rula Trigu, public relations coordinator for Ornithological. “At the same time, this is a great opportunity for the general public to get in touch with a unique world without requiring special equipment or knowledge. At events held across the country, operators will provide binoculars and spotting scopes, and people on hand will help visitors see the birds and understand what species they are.”

Birdwatching is one of the fastest growing forms of entertainment in Europe. “It is suitable for all ages and brings you closer to the beautiful world. There are so many birds around us, with a huge variety, and most of us do not notice them,” says Ms Trigou. “During this period in Greece, we will meet spring migrants who have not all left yet, such as herons, cranes and storks. But we will also see winter migrants that come from the north to spend the winter here in the south, as do many species of geese and ducks.”
