The players of Iran’s national football team expressed their support for the demonstrations in their country on Tuesday before the friendly match against Senegal in Austria, lequipe.fr reports.
The demonstrations were sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old girl who was arrested by morality police on the grounds that she had violated an Iranian law requiring women to cover their heads, arms and legs.
To show their anger at the leadership of their country, the Iranians decided to wear black hoodies before the meeting with Senegal to hide the T-shirts with the national insignia during the anthems, writes News.ro.
“The biggest (punishment) is expulsion from the national team, which is a small price to pay even for one lock of hair of an Iranian woman. It will never be erased from our consciousness. I’m not afraid of being kicked out. Shame on you for killing people so easily, and long live the women of Iran. If they are Muslims, may God make me an infidel.” – wrote Sardar Azmunone of the players on Instagram.
Final score 1-1.
