OUR Steven Spielberg and his new filmFabelmans» received the Audience Choice Award in Toronto International Film Festival.
For many years, this event was one of the most important in the field of cinema and the forerunner of the Oscars. So it is likely that in the coming months the film will be widely presented in the Golden Globe, Bafta and Oscar nominations.
Directed by Spielberg and written by playwright Tony Kushner, The Fabelmans has been cited as one of Spielberg’s most autobiographical films, receiving generally rave reviews. This is the story of a teenage boy dealing with the dissolution of his parents’ marriage in 1960s Arizona.
Other films that have received this award include Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast and Best Picture Oscar winners Nomadland and Green Book. Spielberg, whose films rarely make it into the competitive sections of festivals, said he was delighted with the award. The winner is chosen by the public who came to the festival. “This is the most personal film I have ever made and the warm response from everyone in Toronto made my first visit to the festival so beautiful and welcoming. A big thank you to all the fans in Toronto who did something last weekend that I will never forget.”
Sarah Polley’s Women Talk, based on Miriam Toews’ novel inspired by real-life rape and abuse in the Mennonite religious community, won second prize. Third place was taken by the film “Glass Bow: Knives Out” directed by Rian Johnson.
