King Charles shook hands and chatted with well-wishers who queued for hours in London on Saturday to pass Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin, shortly after thanking ambulance workers helping to organize the sovereign’s funeral, Agerpres reported, citing Reuters.

To cheers of “hip, hip, hooray” and “God save the King”, Charles walked past people queuing to get to the Queen’s hearse, asking them how long they had been waiting and if they were ready for it.

Her son and heir to the throne, Prince William, also addressed the crowd who came to pay their last respects to the Queen, who died last Thursday aged 96.

People continue to flock to central London, joining the hundreds of thousands who have already filed past the coffin to pay their last respects to Britain’s longest-reigning sovereign, a testament to the esteem in which she was held.

As preparations are in full swing for Queen Elizabeth’s funeral on Monday, the King visited police headquarters to thank staff involved in the organisation.

London police said on Friday that the funeral would be the biggest security operation they had ever seen, with prime ministers, presidents and members of the royal family in attendance.
