Poland’s Deputy Interior Minister Bartosz Grodecki said on Thursday that “the border with Russia must be secured” around the Kaliningrad exclave in northern Poland, and announced that a plan was already in place to achieve that goal because it is an “unstable neighbor.” .
In a TV interview, Grodetsky called Russia an “unstable neighbor” that “committed terrorist acts against its neighbors” and because of this “it is necessary to implement security and deterrence measures.” This was reported by EFE and Agerpres agencies on Thursday.
“There is already a project to create an effective and modern security system on the perimeter of the border with Kaliningrad,” said the Polish deputy minister, adding that, in addition to allocating “significant resources” for the implementation of this project, the government will resort to border guards.
After Russia’s war in Ukraine, tensions rose in Polish towns near Kaliningrad, and some municipalities in the area spread word among local residents about using underground garages and basements as shelters from a possible Russian invasion.
Grodecki, who is responsible for migration issues at the Polish Ministry of the Interior, mentioned in an interview the migration crisis that Warsaw faced last year on the border between Poland and Belarus, and emphasized that “this year there were 8,000 attempts to enter the country illegally, and last year there were almost 40,000.”
“Poland will agree with the Baltic countries to solve the problem of entry of Russian citizens into the EU”
On the other hand, the deputy Polish minister reported that “the resolution limiting the entry of Russian citizens to Poland will be changed in agreement with the Baltic countries in order to solve the problem of entry of citizens of the Russian Federation” to the EU.
On September 8, Warsaw joined the decision of the governments of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to limit the entry of Russian citizens to humanitarian cases or cases of extreme necessity.
In an interview, Grodetskyi emphasized that the agreement with the Baltic states envisages “even more restrictions” on these measures.
Kaliningrad, located between Poland, Lithuania and the Baltic Sea, has belonged to Russia since its annexation in 1945 after World War II.
