European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she wants Russian President Vladimir Putin to appear before the International Criminal Court for war crimes in Ukraine, The Guardian reports.
“The fact that Putin has to lose this war and that he has to face the consequences of his actions is important to me,” she told German broadcaster Bild TV.
“We support the collection of evidence” for a possible trial at the International Criminal Court, von der Leyen also said, referring to allegations of war crimes committed in Ukraine.
“It is the basis of our international legal system that we punish these crimes. And in the end, Putin is responsible,” she emphasized.
When asked if Putin would ever appear before the International Criminal Court, Ursula von der Leyen said: “I think it is possible.”
