Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that if the United States decides to supply Kiev with longer-range missiles, it will cross a “red line” and become “part of the conflict,” Reuters reported.
During the press conference, MFA spokeswoman Maria Zakharova added that Russia “reserves the right to defend its territory.”
Washington has supplied Ukraine with advanced missiles that can hit targets up to 80 km away, but has so far avoided publicly announcing that it will send missiles with much greater ranges.
US officials say that Ukraine has promised not to use American missiles for strikes on Russian territory.
“If Washington decides to supply Kyiv with longer-range missiles, it will cross the red line and become a direct part of the conflict,” Zakharova said.
Ukraine has requested and received large quantities of weapons from the United States and other Western allies to help it counter Russian military forces that were sent into Ukraine in February.
Moscow says it has sent troops to prevent Ukraine from being used as a staging ground for Western aggression and to protect Russian speakers. Kyiv and its Western allies reject these arguments as baseless pretexts for an imperial-style war of aggression.
