Following a meeting between Minister of Citizens Protection Takis Theodorikakos, Secretary General of Public Order Michael Karamalakis and Chief of the Greek Police Lieutenant General Konstantinos Skumas, a decision was made to create 12 new Domestic Violence Units of the Greek Police.

In particular, new departments to combat domestic violence have been created in the following police departments:

  • Kallithea Athens Police Department
  • A’Aharnon of the West Attica Police Department
  • Ampelokipon-Menemeni of Thessaloniki Police Department
  • Second Patron of the Achaia Police Department
  • Larisa Larisa OVD
  • A ‘Heraklion of the Heraklion Police Department
  • Chania Police Department of Chania
  • Ioannina Police Department of Ioannina
  • Serres of the Serra Police Department
  • Volos from the Magnesia Police Department
  • Chalkis Police Department of Evia
  • Agrinio of the Acarnania Police Department

Recall that as of October 2021, six domestic violence offices are already operating.

Five of them are in Attica in AT: Omonii, Piraeus Municipal Theatre, Peristeri, Agia Paraskevi, Alimos and
one in Thessaloniki, in A.T. White Tower.

Each of these departments employs 15 specially trained police officers to deal effectively and with the necessary sensitivity with citizens who file complaints of domestic violence. In addition, each of the departments has a patrol car for filing charges and arrests related to crimes of domestic violence only.

In the period from 09/11/2021 to 31/07/2022 in Attica and Thessaloniki, 2073 cases of domestic violence were reviewed by six departments. Cases were opened on all the above incidents, which were transferred to the competent authorities of the prosecutor’s office.

With regard to the training of police officers, it is noted that domestic violence is a subject included in the curricula of the schools of the Police Academy, and as part of additional specialized training activities, 366 EL.AS employees were trained under the program and 910 officers participated in the online training program Council of Europe (HELP program).
