At an official event in St. Paul’s Cathedral in London at the end of a religious ceremony in memory of Queen Elizabeth II, the British national anthem “God Save the King” was played for the first time in 70 years, reports AFP.
This version, performed in the presence of British Prime Minister Liz Truss, replaces “God Save the Queen”, the anthem used after the late sovereign’s accession to the throne in 1952.
Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning sovereign in British history and a powerful presence on the world stage for 70 years, died on Thursday. After him, King Charles III will become the new monarch of the United Kingdom.
