North Korea has passed a law that allows it to carry out a pre-emptive nuclear strike and declares the country’s status as a nuclear power “irreversible”, state media reported on Friday, AFP and Reuters reported.
“If the system of command and control of the national nuclear force is threatened by an attack by enemy forces, a nuclear strike is launched automatically and immediately,” this law states, according to the ACTC news agency.
With this new text, “our country’s status as a nuclear-armed state has become irreversible,” North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said.
The announcement comes amid highly strained inter-Korean relations, with Pyongyang blaming Seoul for the recent COVID-19 epidemic that has hit the country and threatening retaliation against the neighboring state.
North Korea has conducted a series of tests this year despite sanctions, including the first test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) since 2017.
US and South Korean officials have repeatedly warned that North Korea is preparing to conduct a seventh nuclear test
