The Ukrainian agency “Energoatom” accused the Russian troops, which occupied the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in the southeast of Ukraine, of abduction and brutal treatment of its personnel, the dpa agency reported on Thursday.
Energoatom President Petro Kotin told German media group Funke that about 200 people had been detained and the company did not know where some of them were now, adding that there had been cases where agency employees had been tortured and killed, Agerpres reported.
Kotin noted that it is very difficult for the employees of NAEK “Energoatom” to continue working at the plant, adding that those who remain understand how important it is to ensure compliance with nuclear and fire safety standards.
According to Kotin, the work of the enterprise is provided by about 1,000 Ukrainian employees. For comparison, before the war, about 11,000 workers worked at the plant.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) described the situation as unsustainable in a report on the plant released earlier this week. The IAEA warned of staff shortages and said other experts were under such high stress that operational errors could occur. He also stated that his team was not allowed access everywhere in the plant.
