The United States said on Monday that energy supply must “match demand”, opposing a decision taken the same day by OPEC+ countries to cut oil production to support prices, writes AFP.
“The President (Joe Biden) has made it clear that energy supply must match demand to support economic growth and lower prices for consumers in the United States and around the world,” said White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre.
Washington has called on the 13 countries of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and their 10 OPEC+ allies to increase production to lower energy prices that are fueling the highest inflation in decades.
In a statement, a White House spokeswoman highlighted the “historic” use of US strategic oil reserves and the capping of Russian oil prices, “coordinated with allies” to ensure support for global oil supplies, “even as we punish Putin for his actions.” .
Karin Jean-Pierre also notes that the US has increased its domestic production by more than half a million barrels per day since the beginning of the year.
