A Turkish warship docked in Israel this weekend for the first time since 2010, a sign of reconciliation between the two countries following tensions that arose after Israel attacked a Turkish flotilla trying to break the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip, writes AFP.

The Turkish frigate TCG Kemalreis docked on Sunday in the port of Haifa, a city in northern Israel that is home to the headquarters of the Israeli Navy.

A spokesman for the Israeli army said that the Turkish ship made an intermediate stop there as part of “NATO activities”. The Ministry of Defense of Turkey, in turn, reported that the frigate will remain in the port of Haifa until September 6.

After a long period of diplomatic coolness, Israel and Turkey announced on August 17 the full restoration of relations and the return of ambassadors to Tel Aviv and Ankara.

The two countries have been in open diplomatic conflict since the May 31, 2010, attack in international waters of the Mediterranean Sea by Israeli commandos on the Mavi Marmara, a humanitarian flotilla for Gaza, which killed ten Turkish activists. .

After lengthy negotiations, Israel officially apologized to Turkey and agreed to compensate the victims for a total of 20 million dollars. In return, Ankara agreed to withdraw from the international legal process. (Source: Agerpres)
