Parents take out at least 900 lei from their pockets to buy their children what they need to study. Even for those who have children in kindergarten, it is not cheap, because you need at least 500 lei. The money is spent on things, clothes and shoes. Some of the parents have already bought the necessary things, some are waiting for the list from the school.

Preparation for school

To start school, parents have to spend about 900 lei to buy the necessary things.

At least 200 lei are needed for purchases necessary for the beginning of the school year:

• satchel – from 50 lei to several hundred;
• penar – from 20 lei;
• pen – minimum 10 lei;
• pencils plus eraser and sharpener – 7 lei;
• set of geometry – 10-15 lei;
• colored pencils – 10-15 lei;
• watercolors – minimum 10 lei;
• brushes – 10 lei;
• notebook for drawing – 10 lei;
• special notebooks – music, geography – 5 lei;
• 10 ordinary notebooks on the Romanian language and mathematics – 5-6 lei each;

But the average price will be around 400 lei if you buy a better backpack, more expensive paints and watercolors.

In terms of dress, most schools either have uniforms or require students to come in dark pants/skirts and white shirts/t-shirts.

For two pairs of pants/two skirts and 5 shirts or t-shirts, parents take out at least 300 lei from their pockets:

• dark pants – at least 30-50 lei;
• skirt – 30-50 lei minimum;
• white T-shirt/blouse – minimum 20 lei;
• – shirt – 50 lei minimum;

The uniform costs about 80/100 lei per piece. And here you need at least two, plus a shirt, preferably 4-5, so as not to wash every day.

You still need a tracksuit for sports, sneakers, but also shoes/boots for the fall, plus a jacket:

• sports suit – 40-100 lei;
• sneakers 80-100 lei minimum;
• boots – 100-150 minimum;
• autumn jacket – 100 lei minimum;

Necessary for kindergarten

And the opening of a kindergarten is associated with significant expenses for parents – about 500 lei.

First, most public kindergartens ask parents to bring supplies for each child at the beginning of the year, and the price is somewhere between 200-400 lei, depending on the number of items requested:

• knapsack – minimum 40 lei;
• colored pencils – at least 10 lei;
• watercolors – minimum 10 lei;
• brushes – 10 lei;
• notebook for drawing – 10 lei;
• brushes – 10 lei;
• waxed pencils – 5-7 lei;
• glue – 5 lei;
• scissors – 5 lei;
• card – 10 lei
• copy paper – 25 lei;
• colored cardboard – 40 lei;
• plasticine – 15 lei;
• coloring book – 10 lei;

Necessary clothes are added to them, at least 300 lei:

• indoor slippers – at least 30 lei;
• rain boots – at least 40 lei;
• raincoat – at least 80-100 lei;
• autumn shoes – at least 100 lei
• autumn jacket – 80-100 lei;

This is just the basics, not to mention the other clothes. Unexpected expenses may also appear. Even in Bucharest, there are kindergartens where in years gone by parents were scolded for bringing toilet paper, wet wipes, disinfectants, paper rolls or depositing money if the printer or projector broke down.

The 2022-2023 school year will begin on Monday, September 5, marking the first time students will return to school so early after the summer break. Instead of two semesters, there will be five “learning modules” that will alternate with five vacations. Theses will no longer be mandatory, the didactic base will decide how to evaluate the student and how many grades he will give depending on the number of hours per week in the relevant discipline. Instead of semester averages, there will be only one – annual average.
