Ukraine offers to support Germany in its desire to end its dependence on Russian energy imports, providing resources from its own excess electricity to Europe’s largest economy.

  • “Ukraine currently exports electricity to the Republic of Moldova, Romania, Slovakia and Poland, but we are ready to expand exports to Germany as well.
  • We have a sufficient amount of electricity in Ukraine thanks to our nuclear power plants,” Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal told DPA.

He also said he would raise the issue during his visit to Berlin this weekend, where he will meet Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday.

How much electricity does Ukraine export to the EU and the Republic of Moldova

In the context of the Russian invasion, which began on February 24, Ukraine, along with the Republic of Moldova, disconnected from the power grid that connected it to Russia. In mid-March, the Ukrainian power grid was connected to the European one.

Since then, Ukraine exports from 400 to 700 megawatts of electricity per day to the EU and the Republic of Moldova.

Now Schmihal wants his country to increase exports to the EU several times:

  • “It would be very good for both sides.
  • The EU would get more energy, and we would get more currency, which we urgently need.”

Ukraine operates nuclear power plants with a total capacity of more than 14 gigawatts. However, since March, six reactors of the Zaporizhzhya NPP have been under the control of Russian troops.

The international community is extremely concerned that the fighting near Europe’s largest nuclear power plant could lead to a nuclear accident.

Electricity consumption in Ukraine has fallen significantly since the beginning of the Russian invasion, both due to the mass exodus of the population and the economic downturn. This led to an increase in Ukraine’s export capacity. (Source: Agerpres)
