Rajapaksa fled in the early morning of July 13 after mass protests engulfed Colombo, and protesters angered by the devastating economic crisis stormed his official residence. He resigned, then fled to Thailand.

Now the former president has returned to the country and was met at the airport on Saturday by a group of members of the ruling party and parliamentarians, and then taken to a residence provided to him by the government, writes Reuters.

So far, the plans of the ex-president are not clear.

“We were told last night that he needed time because he was not even allowed to leave the room for security reasons. As he spends time at home, he will tell us what he plans to do,” one of the officials said, adding that Rajapaksa was “not even allowed to go to the gym”.

A spokesman for the Sri Lankan government has yet to comment on this information.

Sri Lanka, which is facing one of its worst economic crises, this week reached an agreement with the International Monetary Fund on a loan of 2.9 billion dollars.
