Traffic at Pasajul Unirii in Bucharest is open until the start of the new academic year, mayor Daniel Beluce wrote on his Facebook page. The mayor also presented a video showing how the passageway looked before security works began and how it looks now.
“We are finalizing the final details on Unirii Passage! 77 days, 1848 hours of work, 300 people on the site every day. An extraordinary effort from the team,” Mayor Daniel Beluce wrote on the Facebook page.
“We will circulate through the Unirii passage with the start of the new academic year,” Băluță replied to a citizen who commented on the post and asked when circulation through the passage would resume.
Work on securing the passage began on June 19, lasted two and a half months and cost 12 million euros.
What works were performed: isolation of infiltrates from the side of the road, protection of walls, elimination of architectural parts that could fall, cracks in the walls were filled with special solutions, walls were lined with about 3,000 metal panels, construction networks were replaced. a new CCTV system was installed and a highly efficient ventilation system specially designed for the ventilation of road tunnels was installed, consisting of 60 fans that perform two functions – they are activated when NOX levels become high and in the event of a fire they are activated to blow smoke out of the tunnel .
The flowers arranged on the walls of the passage caused controversy, several townspeople said that it was decorated in a childish way, like a kindergarten. In addition, the time for which the passage was safe is a record.
“The passage now resembles… the entrance to a kindergarten,” commented a resident of Bucharest.
“These cutouts are made on the polycarbonate panels that frame the roads to keep the birds out. Here is a typical case of monkey seeing monkey doing. We don’t know what they’re for, but we put them up anyway because they’re good,” wrote another.
“With this design, Aunt Rodica participated in the competition “The most beautiful balcony” organized by Firea,” wrote another citizen.
Before the work began, the passage was in deep decay.
The floor of the Union still needs to be strengthened
In parallel, there is also an examination of Planșeul Unirii, a bridge that spans the Dâmbovița river, and which, according to experts, also needs urgent intervention in the support structure – the supporting pillars and the beams between them.
- “Intervening on the Union Floor is extremely difficult and the experts will tell us how we should go about it so that we can avoid tragedies and be effective in our approach.
- They have already started the necessary research before we actually start the case and it is estimated that the examination will take about 12-18 months.
- Now it is clear that everything cannot be delayed any longer, because the situation does not look very good,” said Daniel Beluce before starting security work at Pasajul Unirii.
