US President Joe Biden will ask Congress for $11.7 billion in emergency funding to provide military aid and budget support to Ukraine and $22.4 billion in aid ahead of a potential spike in Covid cases in the fall, he announced at the White House on Friday, Reuters reported.

The emergency funding request would also include $2 billion to address the impact of Russia’s war in Ukraine on U.S. energy supplies, Shalanda Young, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, wrote in a blog.

The $47.1 billion funding request came in before the end of fiscal year 2022 on Sept. 30. Congress has yet to pass a 2023 funding bill, and Young said lawmakers would likely have to pass an interim funding measure that would give them more time to debate a more comprehensive tax package.

The White House requests would also include $3.9 billion in funding to combat the monkeypox outbreak and $6.5 billion in disaster relief, Young wrote.
