Thessaloniki: Unofficial landfill fire fully under control – Mayor speaks of arson

The fire that has been blazing since early morning at the plot-unofficial landfill, over the ring road of Thessaloniki in the Evosmos area, has been taken under full control. Firefighters remain on site to monitor and fire safety.

According to the fire department, the fire, which broke out shortly before 03:00, did not spread to the surrounding areas. A total of 24 firefighters with nine vehicles, as well as water tanks and local government project equipment, tried to put out the fire. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.

Mayor of Cordelio Evosmos: “Intentional action”

The mayor of Cordelio Evosmos, Kleanthis Mandalianos, claims that the fire on a plot of land that is temporarily used for bulky waste was probably due to arson: “The fire was the second in three days, today’s was stronger, fortunately we managed to extinguish it again,” the mayor of APE notes, pointing out that “is this a deliberate act” and questions the exact intentions of “an act of outrage? superficiality; or slander on the administration of the municipality? In fact, Mr. Mandalianos points out that “a few days ago there was a threat from someone. He stopped and said that “it will catch fire and you will cry.” Ahead were the workers and the head of cleaning. The mayor of Kordelios Evosmos points out that today’s fire “has a video from a resident of the area and testimonies that were transferred to the fire department’s investigative department.”

On a particular piece of land used by the cleaning service, Mr. Mandalianos mentions, “there is a temporary collection of bulky items, from where the contracting company then picks them up and transports them to another location a second year later. In fact, in the next period, the transfer will be carried out immediately to another area. Unfortunately, despite the presence of a fence, private individuals also come to the site and illegally dump bulky waste,” concludes Mayor Cordelio-Evosmou.
