Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Greece of targeting Turkish planes with its S-300 air defense systems, dpa and Agerpres reported on Wednesday.
Erdogan accused Athens of a “hostile act” on Tuesday night, Anadolu news agency reported. With this, Greece provoked NATO and its allies, the Turkish president said.
Athens has denied the allegations.
Along with other news agencies, Anadolu reported last week that Turkish planes were “harassed” by Greek defense systems based in Crete, citing Ankara’s defense ministry. The Turkish planes were in international airspace, the ministry said.
Greece’s defense ministry responded on Monday, saying its defense system in question had not even been activated yet, state television reported.
Relations between the two countries are now at an all-time low due to a series of conflicts, the most important of which stemmed from accusations by the Greek government that Ankara has repeatedly violated Greek airspace.
