Grades V-VIII GPA will be removed from the calculation of the GPA for high school entrance, so the graduate ranking will be based only on GPA on the national assessment starting in the 2022-2023 school year. It also returns to pre-pandemic curriculum for both undergraduate and national assessments.

This was stated by the Minister of Education Sorin Kimpeanu after the meeting of the Social Dialogue Commission of the Ministry of Education.

According to him, it was decided to apply the following measures in the 2022-2023 academic year:

  • 1. The average indicator of grades V-VIII is removed from the calculation of the average admission to high school. Thus, the rating of graduates will be carried out only on the basis of the average score obtained at the external examination.
  • 2. Taking into account that there were no interruptions in education in the 2021-2022 academic year, assuming that there will be no interruptions in the 2022-2023 academic year, it was decided to return to the exam programs that operated before the start of the pandemic, as for the external examinations for graduates 8 class, as well as for external examinations for the bachelor’s degree.
  • 3. From the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, students of the 5th grade will receive social scholarships and study scholarships for the first time. Social and educational grants will be awarded subject to meeting the criteria for both grant categories (including the criterion of a maximum number of 20 absences and, in the case of educational grants, based on annual qualifications and obtaining an annual grade of “Very Good” in the 4th grade). The budget allocated for student scholarships (1.032 billion lei) was supplemented in the last budget correction by 300 million lei for 2022.

Until now, the average acceptance rate, on the basis of which graduates of the 9th grades of secondary schools were enrolled, was calculated as a weighted average between the overall average score on the national assessment made by the graduates of the 8th grades, which has a weight of 80%, and the overall average graduation score of 5 – 8 classes, which has a weight of 20% in the calculation of the average entrance score.

Students will return to school in a week, which is Monday, September 5, and the new school year will bring several changes. For example, instead of semesters, there will be five academic modules, which will alternate with five vacations, diploma theses will no longer be mandatory, and there will be only one average during the academic year.
