Venezuela and Colombia officially resumed their diplomatic relations, severed for three years, after the arrival on Sunday in Caracas of the ambassador of Colombia appointed by the new president, Gustavo Petro, reports AFP, citing Agerpres.
“Relations with Venezuela should never have been broken, we are brothers and an imaginary line cannot divide us,” Ambassador Armando Benedetti wrote on Twitter.
According to the diplomat, more than eight million Colombians live at the expense of bilateral trade with Venezuela. One of the goals of this decision is to restore trade relations between the two countries. On August 11, Venezuela and Colombia announced their intention to exchange ambassadors.
In addition to the exchange of ambassadors, the normalization process involves the full opening of the more than 2,000-kilometer border that separates the two countries, completely closed to vehicles since 2015 and reopened only to pedestrians since the end of the year.
