
The Washington Department of Justice on Friday released a redacted version of the court filing that allowed the FBI to seize classified government documents from former President Donald Trump’s Florida residence, the newspaper reported. Reuters and Agerpres agencies.
“The government is conducting a criminal investigation into the improper removal and storage of classified information in unauthorized locations, as well as the illegal concealment or disposal of government documents,” the 38-page document begins.
The release of the document, which could shed light on the evidence of the unprecedented raid, was ordered by Judge Bruce Reinhart, the same judge who approved the Palm Beach FBI seizure on August 8.
The investigation aims to determine whether Trump illegally took documents from the White House at the end of his presidency in January 2021 and whether he tried to obstruct the investigation.
What the FBI collected in the residence of Donald Trump
The FBI seized more than 20 boxes of 11 sets of classified documents from the former president’s residence, some even classified as top secret, the highest level of security.
Prosecutors requested that the entire court filing regarding the warrant be kept confidential so as not to prejudice the investigation. The press challenged this measure in court and received a redacted version of the document.
In Thursday’s ruling, Judge Reinhart said there were good reasons for partially declassifying the statement — including the need to protect the identities of witnesses and federal agents, as well as the prosecution’s strategy and materials prepared for a grand jury, which will decide whether the process is necessary.
