TVR’s Board of Directors approved today the participation in Eurovision 2023 and the beginning of the steps necessary to identify a Swiss law firm to evaluate the dispute with the EBU, TVR said in a press release.

The decision came after a scandal at this year’s Eurovision, when the contest organizer canceled Romania’s vote due to irregularities.

The head of TVR, Dan Turturica, then said that he would support TVR’s governing bodies to refuse to participate in Eurovision.

However, on Friday, the Administrative Council unanimously approved Romania’s participation in the 67th Eurovision Song Contest, which will be held in Great Britain in May.

According to the invitation received by SRTv from the EBU, broadcasters must announce their intention to participate by September 15, with the possibility of opting out without financial consequences until October 11.

According to the calendar set by the organizers, the final list of registered countries should be announced before the end of the year.

General President Dan Christian Turturica asked the present members of SRTv’s Board of Directors (CA) to give a mandate to contact some Swiss law firms to assess SRTv’s chances in the dispute with the EBU/European Broadcasting Union – organizer of the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). The mandate, granted by 11 votes in favour, also aims to recover the costs associated with such an approach, as a result of the situation at this year’s edition, when the organizer canceled Romania’s votes. According to the Eurovision regulations, any dispute is resolved under the jurisdiction of Switzerland, the quoted source said.

The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the most popular international music competitions, held every year since 1956. The show is one of the longest-running and most popular television programs in the world, broadcasting in Europe as well as Australia, Asia and the United States.

Romanian television has been participating in Eurovision since 1993.
