Maps of Kyiv are no longer relevant as of Thursday, as the city authorities are trying to rename 95 streets and squares that had Russian or Soviet names, the mayor of the Ukrainian capital Vitaliy Klitschko said, DPA and Agerpres write.

The streets of the Ukrainian capital, which bore the names of Russian writers of the 19th century, such as Alexander Pushkin, Leo Tolstoy, Anton Chekhov, Ivan Turgenev and Mykhailo Lermontov, have been renamed. The same fate befell the communist philosophers of German origin, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, after whom many streets throughout the Soviet Union were named.

Among other names that will no longer bear the streets of the capital of Ukraine are the names of Soviet military leaders from the Second World War, as well as the names of Russian cities such as Moscow, Rostov-on-Don and Magnitogorsk.

Despite the fact that he was born in Kyiv, the name of the Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov, one of the greatest writers of the Soviet Union, was also removed.

All the streets in question will now have Ukrainian names, and there will even be a street of Heroes of the Azov Regiment, which alludes to a group of Ukrainian soldiers who resisted Russian troops in the city of Mariupol for several weeks earlier this year, DPA reports.

Klitschko noted that not all new names have been established.

“This is an important step to reduce the lying manipulations by the Russian aggressors, influence and interpretation of our history,” he said.

Some of the new names will be chosen by the Ukrainian public. Anyone in Ukraine can participate, and more than 6.5 million people have access to the government’s smartphone app.

It was revealed that the changes coincided with Thursday’s marking of six months since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
