Russian services spied on the training of Ukrainian soldiers in the use of new weapons at military bases, one of which is American, located in Germany, the German weekly Der Spiegel reported on Friday, as quoted by AFP and Agerpres.
The German military counter-intelligence agency MAD has “clues” about these espionage operations, the weekly reports.
Two centers were specifically monitored, namely the Idar-Oberstein base in Rhineland-Palatinate and the Grafenwehr base in Bavaria, which is run by the US military.
German counterintelligence claims that it was mainly about the presence of vehicles at the entrance to military towns.
In Idar-Oberstein, the German army trained Ukrainian soldiers to use the Panzerhaubitze 2000 howitzer, and in Grafenwehr, American troops trained Ukrainians to use Western artillery systems.
According to MAD, small drones have also repeatedly flown over the training grounds.
German services also suspect Russia of trying to spy on the mobile phones of Ukrainians while studying in Germany.
MAD fears, among other things, that the Russian services will try to eliminate opponents who would flee Russia to hide in Germany, or possible deserters and defectors from the security forces.
In recent years, Germany has become the scene of several espionage cases attributed to Russian services.
