Moscow may this week announce the holding of one or more “illegitimate” referendums in occupied Ukraine, trying to justify the annexation of Ukrainian territories to Russia, White House spokesman John Kirby told reporters on Wednesday, AFP reports.

“We have information that Russia continues to prepare mock referendums” in Kherson (south), Zaporizhzhia, the separatist regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, as well as Kharkiv, said Kirby, a spokesman for the executive branch of national security.

“The leadership of Russia gave the mandate to hold these referendums,” he added. “In fact, we expect Russia to report the first or first of these fake referendums by the end of the week.”

Kirby cited several polls conducted in recent months among the Ukrainian population in Kyiv-controlled territory, which show that more than 90% of Ukrainians do not want to join Russia.
